The Spaces Between Patterns
The Spaces Between Patterns
This drawing captures Jenny with her hands gently cradling the back of her head as her hair cascades gracefully over her shoulder. Her pose conveys confidence and calmness, creating a sense of strength and intimacy. The figure's shoulders stretch to the very edges of the paper, anchoring her presence within the frame. The surrounding background, though abstract and minimal, holds a quiet energy that complements her expression.
Edward drew deep inspiration from Indigenous artist Gaypalani Wanambi, particularly her etched metal works of honeybees. He was fascinated by the intricate rhythms and organic patterns she creates—forms that carry both cultural symbolism and artistic resonance. Echoing this, Edward introduced a similar sense of pattern into the woman’s dress, carefully erasing areas to reveal a constellation of leopard-like spots in the negative space. This technique brings a layered sense of movement and visual texture to the work.
Together, these elements create a portrait that feels both steady and full of life, honouring stillness while gently expressing her energy.
