The Art Dealer
The Art Dealer
This drawing portrays art dealer and cultural figure Michael Reid OAM. Edward first met Michael two years ago during his internship at the Michael Reid Gallery in Sydney. At the time, the idea of capturing someone so prominent in the art world felt daunting. However, through his time working at the gallery and engaging in thoughtful conversations with Michael, Edward came to appreciate his sharp sense of humour, humility, and perseverance. It was this growing respect that led Edward to ask for permission to create this portrait.
Michael is shown with his arms gently crossed, standing under the gallery lights. The setting is the Chippendale gallery, with two works by Max Dupain in the background, one being the well-known photograph The Sunbaker, which is partially visible. Edward’s drawing was influenced by Jonathan Dalton’s Natasha in the Other Room, particularly Dalton’s attention to detail and spatial composition. Although The Art Dealer is cropped at mid-body, Edward adopted a similar angled pose to create a direct, grounded sense of connection with the viewer.
This work reflects Edward’s early experiences in the art world and his effort to portray Michael not just as a public figure, but as someone who has quietly influenced his development as an emerging artist.
