Moved by this approach, Edward set out to capture the authentic, emotional presence of his own subject. Using charcoal to sculpt her features, he allowed the natural whites of the paper to illuminate her form. Rapid, abstract marks surround the portrait, adding a sketch-like quality that embraces the spontaneity and rawness of the medium.
