Artist Statement

I am a visual artist born and raised in Sydney, working on the lands of the Gamaragal people.

My practice begins with photographs I take while travelling around Australia, which I then reinterpret in oil paint. Beauty, for me, starts with noticing. It’s choosing the scene that warms my heart and makes me question why. The locals I meet along the way, with their own stories of the land, add a hidden layer to what I see. My paintings hold the beauty of the landscape, whether it's walking through a rainforest, sitting on the rocks by the shore, or driving past a farm at sunset. By using oil paints, I strive to make the moment more vivid and magical. I work back and forth, improvising, letting abstraction blur the edges and setting cool tones against warm, until the composition captures how I truly felt standing there. What remains is a soft, dreamlike world where beauty is both found and shared.

I stretch and prime my own canvases, then build thin layers of oil paint, balancing luminous tones with muted, washy passages and offsetting them with experimental marks made using found objects. My influences, including Andrew Wyeth, Caspar David Friedrich and Gerhard Richter, inform my interest in atmosphere, feeling and the psychological weight of composition.

I began as a portrait artist, drawn to the moment of introspection when someone is lost in their own world, and to how their surroundings shape the story around them. That interest carries into my landscapes. At the heart of my practice is the moment of introspection that occurs when someone encounters a place. I aim to hold that pause still, inviting viewers to pause and feel at ease in the work.
